Rive is an interactive animation tool. You design and animate vector graphics in its editor, wire them to a state machine, and ship the result as a .riv file that a runtime plays inside an app, website or game, where it can respond to taps, hovers and application state.
KinoViz is a browser-based animation studio for motion design. You compose vectors, text, images, video and 3D models on an infinite canvas, animate them on a keyframe timeline with easing and physics, and export a finished MP4 or WebM.
Both run in a browser tab. The difference is not the editor — it is what comes out the other end.
Choose Rive if your animation needs to react. Game UI, app onboarding, animated icons that change with state, characters that respond to input, anything a developer will embed and drive from code. Rive's state machine and its runtimes for JavaScript, iOS, Android, Flutter, React, React Native, C++, Unity and Unreal (listed on its pricing page as of September 2026) are the reason people pick it, and nothing in KinoViz replaces them.
Choose KinoViz if your animation needs to play. Product demos, launch videos, social posts, logo stings, explainer sequences, ad creative. Anything that ends its life as a video file on a landing page, in a feed, or in a deck. KinoViz also covers cases Rive does not reach at all: 3D model import, physics simulation, GLSL materials and an AI assistant that drafts a scene from a text prompt.

This is the whole comparison in one paragraph. A Rive project is a component with behaviour. It has inputs, it has states, and it keeps running inside the product because a developer wired it up. A KinoViz project is a scene with a duration. It has a first frame and a last frame, and when you are done you press Export and get a file you can drop anywhere a video goes.
Neither is better. They answer different briefs. The mistake is picking Rive for a launch video, then spending an afternoon in state machine documentation you never needed, or picking KinoViz for an app loading indicator and discovering there is no runtime to embed.
Both editors are genuinely capable on vectors. Rive's advantage is rigging: bones, meshes and constraints, which is what makes character animation and organic deformation practical. If you are animating a mascot, Rive has tools KinoViz does not.
KinoViz's vector toolkit is built around motion graphics shapes rather than characters. It has a pen tool, boolean operations (union, subtract, intersect, exclude) that flatten into editable paths, trim path for line-draw animation, and an effector system for animating arrays of elements together. Here the two tools stop overlapping. KinoViz includes a WebGL 3D system on every plan including Free: import a GLB, GLTF or FBX model up to 50 MB with DRACO compression, light it, and animate it on the same timeline as your 2D layers. Alongside that sit a Rapier-based physics simulation, and a materials and effects layer with liquid glass, reeded and frosted glass, liquid metal, glow and bloom, ASCII and halftone treatments. The advanced materials sit on the Pro plan. Rive does not attempt any of this, because a runtime file that has to render at 120fps on a mid-range Android phone cannot afford it.
KinoViz includes a conversational AI assistant, currently in Beta and available from the Creator plan. You describe a scene and it drafts elements and keyframes you can then edit by hand, rather than handing back a locked video. It runs on a credit balance: 50 credits a month on Creator, 200 on Pro, with top-up packs available. AI generation docs cover what a credit is spent on.
Rive does not market AI drafting as a core capability, and for its use case that is a reasonable call — a state machine is a specification, not a sketch.
KinoViz exports MP4 (H.264), WebM (VP9) and a single PNG frame on every plan, plus a .kino project file from Creator upward. There is no GIF and no Lottie export, and transparent output is limited to the PNG frame — both video formats bake in the canvas background. Resolution and frame rate scale with the plan: 540p at 24fps with a watermark on Free, 1080p at 30fps on Creator, up to 1920px on the short edge at 60fps on Pro. Rive's primary output is the .riv file plus a runtime integration. Its paid plans also list MP4, WebM, GIF and PNG sequence video exports as of September 2026, so it is not locked to interactive delivery.

The honest read: for one person shipping video, KinoViz is cheaper. For a team shipping interactive components into a product, Rive's per-seat model buys something KinoViz has no equivalent for.
Pick Rive if you are a product designer or game developer whose animation lives inside software, if you need character rigging, or if your engineering team is already running a Rive runtime.
Pick KinoViz if you are a motion designer, marketer or founder whose animation lives on a landing page, a feed or a slide, if you need 3D models and 2D vectors on one timeline, or if you want an AI first draft you can still edit frame by frame.
