Export Formats
Export KinoViz animations as MP4, WebM, PNG, or the .kino source file, and learn how resolution, frame rate, and watermarks differ by plan.
Supported Formats
The export formats available to you depend on your plan. All exports are rendered locally in your browser — keep the tab open until the download finishes. Nothing is uploaded to a render server.
Format availability by plan
All video and image formats are available on every plan. What changes between plans is the maximum resolution, frame rate, and whether a watermark is applied — not which formats you can export.
| Format | Free | Pro | Studio |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP4 (H.264) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| WebM (VP9) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| PNG (single frame) | Yes | Yes | Yes |
.kino (source file) | No | Yes | Yes |
Free exports include a KinoViz watermark. The
.kinosource file requires Pro or above and is exported via File → Export as .kino — a full project JSON file that can be re-imported into KinoViz.GIF export is not currently available. Export MP4 or WebM and convert with a third-party tool if you need a GIF.
WebM (VP9)
- Codec: VP9
- Transparency: Not supported — the canvas background is baked into every frame (for transparent output, export a PNG frame)
- Best for: Web embeds and social platforms that accept WebM, where a smaller file matters more than universal playback
- Note: Not all video players support WebM — use MP4 for maximum compatibility
MP4 (H.264)
- Codec: H.264
- Compatibility: Universal — YouTube, Instagram, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, email, Slack
- Best for: General distribution, social media, email
Available on all plans.
PNG (Single Frame)
Exports the current frame as a single PNG image.
- Quality: Lossless
- Best for: Thumbnails, still previews, print assets
Available on all plans.
.kino (Source Format)
Exports the full project as a .kino file — a JSON-based format containing all elements, keyframes, assets, and settings. This file can be re-imported into KinoViz to continue editing.
Available on Pro and Studio plans.
Resolution and FPS by Plan
maxResolution is measured as the short edge in pixels. The actual output dimensions depend on your canvas aspect ratio.
| Plan | Max resolution (short edge) | Max FPS |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 540p | 24 fps |
| Pro | 1920px (Full HD+) | 60 fps |
| Studio | 1920px (Full HD+) | 60 fps |
Watermark
The Free plan automatically adds a KinoViz watermark to all exports. There is no manual toggle — upgrade to Pro or above to remove it.
Running an Export
- Click Export in the top bar.
- Select the format available to your plan.
- Choose resolution and frame rate.
- Click Start Export.
Exports render in your browser and download when finished. Keep the tab open and avoid switching away during long renders — browsers throttle background tabs.
Export Tips
- PNG for transparency — Export a single frame when you need a transparent asset. Video export (MP4 and WebM alike) bakes the canvas background in; transparent video export is not yet available.
- MP4 for compatibility — For broad distribution (social media, email, presentations), MP4 is the safest choice.
- PNG for stills — Use PNG frame export for thumbnails or when you need a single lossless image.
- Draft at lower resolution — Export at a lower resolution while iterating; switch to full resolution for the final version.
Next Steps
- Publishing — Share your animation via a public link or embed
- Billing & Plans — Upgrade for additional formats and higher resolution
- Animation & Timeline — Finish your animation before exporting
