Free Local Tools: Clean Up and Background Remover
Two free browser tools for prepping media before it goes into KinoViz — paint out a boxed watermark, or cut a subject out of a photo. Everything runs on your own machine.
Overview
KinoViz's Tools menu includes two small, free utilities for preparing images and video: a watermark-removal tool called Clean Up, and a Background Remover. Both run the model locally in your browser — nothing you drop in is uploaded — and both are free to try, with a KinoViz account only required when you download a result. They work as standalone tools at their own addresses, and whatever they produce can be brought straight into KinoViz Studio to animate.
Clean Up
What it does: Paints out a visible watermark you box yourself — a logo, a timestamp, a caption overlay — on an image or a video.
How to use it:
- Open Clean Up and drop in an image or a video.
- Draw a box over the watermark. On video, that same box is applied to every frame — there's no tracking, so it works best on a watermark that stays put.
- Download the result directly, or additionally save a ZIP that keeps the original file, its SHA-256 hash, and the selection you made.
Limits: Images up to 25 MiB, video up to 150 MiB and 120 seconds, and video needs a browser with WebCodecs support. This is a fixed-selection repair with no motion tracking — it does not detect or remove invisible markers such as SynthID, and any pixel edit or re-encode may drop C2PA content credentials. Only process content you own or are licensed to edit.
Background Remover
What it does: Cuts the subject out of a still photo in a single pass, then lets you switch the backdrop between transparent, white, black or a custom colour instantly, without re-running the model.
How to use it:
- Open Background Remover and drop in a photo.
- Wait for the one-time cut-out, then flip between backdrop colours to preview each option.
- Download the result — a non-transparent backdrop is composited in at download time.
Limits: Still images only, no video. The underlying model is lightweight, so check fine hair, fur and semi-transparent edges by eye before you use the result. A transparent PNG export can be brought into KinoViz Studio and animated there.
Privacy and local processing
Both models — the watermark repair and the background cut-out — run entirely on your own machine, in your browser. Nothing you open a tool with is uploaded anywhere, so a file never leaves your device unless you choose to download or share the result yourself. The first time you use a tool, it downloads its model; after that, your browser caches it so later visits skip the download.
Why sign-in only appears at download
You can open either tool, drop in a file, and preview the full result without an account. A KinoViz account is only asked for at the moment you download the finished file — it's how downloads are tied to your account, not a gate on trying the tool.
FAQ
Do I need to sign in to use these tools?
No. Every tool works fully without an account — open it and start dragging files in. You're only asked to sign in with your KinoViz account at the point you download a result.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. Both tools run the model on your own machine, in the browser. Nothing you drop in is sent to a server, and closing the tab discards everything that was in progress.
Why is the first run of a tool slower than the next one?
The first use of a tool downloads its model to your browser. The browser then caches it, so later runs skip the download and start straight away.
Can Clean Up follow a watermark that moves around a video?
No. Clean Up applies one fixed selection to every frame of the video — there is no motion tracking and no temporal consistency model. It's built for a watermark that stays in the same place, such as a corner logo or a persistent timestamp.
Does Background Remover work on video?
Not yet — it handles still images only. Export the transparent PNG and bring it into KinoViz Studio if you want to animate the cut-out subject.
Do these tools guarantee the result is authentic or that credentials survive?
No. Clean Up doesn't detect or remove invisible markers such as SynthID, and any pixel edit or re-encode can drop C2PA content credentials. Only process content you own or are licensed to edit.
